Port Covington Marina is Temporary Home for Prospector Racing Yacht in Preparation for Renowned Annapolis to Newport Race
Prospector, a state-of-the-art racing yacht set to participate in the renowned Annapolis to Newport Race, is making Port Covington Marina its home for the month of May, before making its way to Annapolis in early June to compete in the Annapolis to Newport Race.
Port Covington Marina, located on our 235-acre site on the Middle Branch of the Patapsco River, is providing Prospector and her team the ideal location to dock and lift from the water, where it will undergo general maintenance. The Prospector team selected Port Covington Marina because of its unique deep-water access, as the facility can accommodate boats that draw up to 16 feet, and it allows the 68 ft yacht to seamlessly use the marina as its temporary home. In fact, according to Prospector’s Tery Glackin, Port Covington Marina was the only location between Georgia to New York that could accommodate the boat arriving and being pulled from the water in preparation for the race.
Prospector, based at Shelter Island, New York, has raced across the globe, from Australia’s famed Sydney to Hobart race, to the Pacific Cup (San Francisco – Hawaii), and races in Italy, the Caribbean and throughout New England and the east coast. Owned by partners Larry Landry, Paul McDowell, Martin Roesch, and David Siwicki, Prospector participates in races throughout the year. With a crew of 16 – 18 onboard, the team competes in “bucket list” ocean races and regattas including the Caribbean 600, The Transatlantic Race, the Fastnet Race, Middle Sea Race, Les Voiles de St. Barth and, of course, Annapolis to Newport.
This year marks the 38th running of the 475-mile biennial Annapolis-Newport Race. The race is one of the oldest U.S. East Coast blue water race, existing in various forms dating back to 1871. The competition links two historic seaports that have roots back to the colonial era, and offers the challenge of racing in both the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The course begins in Maryland’s state capitol, then proceeds south for 120 miles to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, then east to the Chesapeake Light and then north east to the finish off at Castle Hill in Newport. The Annapolis to Newport race was officially established in 1947 is conducted on a continuing basis in alternate years with the Newport-Bermuda Race.
Port Covington Marina is part of 2.5 miles of restored shoreline surrounding Port Covington. Port Covington Marina provides convenient waterfront access to Baltimore’s attractions as well as a gateway to the Chesapeake Bay. Port Covington Marina currently has long term and transient dockage available. It provides unique amenities including a bathhouse, pump-out, Wi-Fi, electric meters with amperages of 30 and 50, outdoor picnic pavilion, plus nearby retail, restaurants, lodging, and parking.
