Trash is one of the leading causes of pollution in Baltimore City and one of the easiest to address. According to the State of Maryland’s Department of the Environment, the Middle Branch receives drainage from three distinct Maryland watersheds: Baltimore Harbor, Gwynns Falls, and Jones Falls, all within Baltimore City and Baltimore County. It is one of only two specific segments of the Patapsco River that is considered impaired for trash.
With a one-of-a-kind waterfront development on the horizon, it is imperative that we join the effort to improve the condition of the water surrounding our city. Earlier this month, Plank Industries and Sagamore Development joined Blue Water Baltimore and members of the South Baltimore Six neighborhoods to help clean up the south bank of the Patapsco River’s Middle Branch. Over the course of a Saturday, the team removed 7,200 pounds of trash and garbage from the riverbank. This is just the first step in a long-term commitment to water preservation. There are more community clean-up events to come!
