On Saturday, September 30, The Foundery at City Garage in Port Covington held the first annual Garage Fest, a free, family-friendly day focused on creators and inventors in and around the Baltimore community. Garage Fest attracted over 60 vendors and more than 800 guests, and from crafters to educators, and engineers to bakers — this event had something for everyone.
Tinybrickoven was on site with cooking demonstrations showing off the world’s most portable brick oven, cooking pizzas in less than two minutes. Rack House Bakers brought their specialty whiskey cakes made with Sagamore Rye, which is distilled and bottled right in Port Covington.
Vendors like Code in the Schools and the Baltimore Robotics Club were also in attendance at Garage Fest entertaining guests of all ages.
“Garage Fest exceeded all expectations. This was the first maker-fair we’ve held at The Foundery, and it was unlike any maker-fair I have ever been to or read about,” said Corey Fleischer, co-founder of The Foundery.
“The diverse group of makers brought together entrepreneurs, hobbyists, and educators from all areas of Baltimore and the surrounding counties. We had people showing off creations from food to robots to clothing and much more. The catapult build station took ‘fun for the whole family’ to a new level. I brought all three of my kids to Garage Fest, and we had to drag them away from the event at the end of the day,” continued Fleischer.
Garage Fest was a way to inspire meaningful experiences in the community spanning from technology, health and wellness to inventing, building, and the arts for people of all ages.
Matt Barinholtz, founder of Future Makers, was thrilled to see people of all ages at the event. He said, “Garage Fest was a great place to see how Baltimore is a leader in the out-of-school maker education community. Seeing such a diverse crowd of little ones working independently – or coaching adult family members – through the building and launching of high-pressure pneumatic rockets showed how making really builds critical thinking, communication, creativity, and innovative mindsets.”
